The Pontifical Mission Societies | PMS

Fr. Kizito Nhundu

PMS Coordinator

The Vatican II in its document on the Missionary activities of the Church, AD GENETES DIVINITUS, stressed the importance of the missionary Mandate.  It singles out the PMS and stressed that:

They should be given first place, because they are a means by which Catholics are imbued from infancy with a truly Universal and Missionary outlook and also a means of promoting an effective collection of funds for all the missions, according to the needs of each” (AG.38).”

There are Four Pontifical Mission Societies

The Church’s Instrument of universal awareness and cooperation for evangelization in the world.”

Pope JOHN PAUL II Describing PMS

A worldwide network at the service of the Holy Father to sustain the Mission and the Young Churches through Prayer and Charity”

ARCHBISIOP GAMPIETRO DAL TOSO (PMS President) on the Charism of PMS

PMS preaches, propagates and ensures the Catholicity and Solidarity of the Church.  It emphasis the Universality of the church over and above it’s locality.

The Four Pontifical Mission Societies

PMS is like one big Tree with four branches therefore PMS is always plural. The four Pontifical Mission Societies are:

1.Pontifical Society of the Missionary Childhood (POSI,MCA)

2.Pontifical Society For the Propagation of Faith (POPF)

3.Pontifical Society of St. Peter the Apostle (POSPA , Vocations)

4.The Pontifical Missionary Union (PMU)

The Governance of these four societies was transferred to Rome to become works of the Apostolic see, itself, thus with the title ‘pontifical’ and entrusted to Dicastery for Evangelization (Propagation of Faith), which directs and coordinates missionary work and missionary cooperation throughout the world.  However, although they are societies of the Pope, they belong to the all the Bishops and to the entire people of God.  They are woven into the very fabric of the Universal Church.
